EU financing Cyclades towards a sustainable future

(2019) 10.000€ awarded

The next months will be dedicated to designing and planning how Greece, and regions, such as the Cyclades and the Ionian Islands, will apply the resources available from the EU’s regional and rural development funds during the new (2021-2027) programming period. These funds, which will amount to more than € 20 billion, will determine the development model to be followed. All scientific studies concur that this next decade is critical for the transition towards sustainable development. The extent to which the transition will take place, is, in turn, dependent on decisions taken today and actions implemented through 2030. Decisions must lead to transformative change in policy and in practice, particularly of those sectors, such as agriculture, energy and tourism that have the greatest impact on the islands’ natural environment. The direction of the funds that will be granted towards these sectors can act as a catalyst for the transformation needed.

With this project entitled “EU Financing Greece towards a sustainable future in the Cyclades ”, our partner the Green Tank aims to document and promote the opportunities that Greece, and in particular the regions of Cyclades and the Ionian Islands, have to allocate and use EU funds of the 2021-2027 programming period, which will be planned over the next few months, so as to transition to a more sustainable future.

Specifically, the project aims to involve and inform key stakeholders at the national and regional levels about the sustainability potential of the Cyclades and Ionian regions during the 2021-2027 programming period. In this context, the project will support the building of the capacity of these authorities as well as of:

– members of the Greek Parliament and of the European Parliament

– local communities

– NGOs and local organizations.

In parallel, during the implementation of the project, opportunities will be sought to cultivate synergies with these stakeholders that will influence not only the design and planning of the new programming period but also its implementation and its monitoring.

The Green Tank’s new report identifies the European funding sources that Greece and its regions will have available for the green transformation of key sectors of the economy and the transition to a sustainable future during the 2021-2027 period.

During the next years, Greece will have an unprecedented level of EU resources available. This situation marks a rare opportunity for the country. Used properly, it can act as a catalyst for change in strategy and development perspective, in line with the provisions of the European Green Agreement.

Aiming to contribute to this direction, the Green Tank’s new report “Financing opportunities for a sustainable future during the 2021-2027 period” presents the main provisions of the EU’s multiannual financial framework (MFF) for the 2021-2027 period, focusing on the financing opportunities that will support Greece’s transition to a sustainable future.
