Linking fishermen to the tourism economy

Enaleia organized for the 1st time the educational course about sustainable fishing & fishing tourism – “Fish Smarter” in collaboration with the Cyclades Preservation Fund and the Costas M. Lemos Foundation, aiming to give a full perspective of what fishing tourism is as a concept, as well as one professional fisherman can obtain a license for that and how he can attract tourists. In addition, when needed, more information on other sustainable fishing techniques were provided.

From June 2019 to January 2020, the team of Enaleia visited in total on 8 Cycladic and 2 Ionian islands to promote sustainable fishing and fishing tourism, training in total 92 professional fishermen! The islands that the team of Enaleia visited were: Milos, Kimolos, Paros, Antiparos, Naxos, Amorgos, Kythnos, Anafi, Lefkada and Zante.

At least 3 professional fishermen started already the procedures for getting a fishing tourism license after the training they received by our partners, while 20 more are now positive to follow when the call for grants  will be available by the Cyclades Development Agency in order for them to converting their fishing boat to a fishing tourism boat which provides safety specs.

Grigoris Nitas, project manager, Enaleia:

The best (one) thing that happened with our program:
The “big heartwarming thank you” that we got from many fishermen, for the training
that we did to them about alternative fishing techniques. This was for sure the
biggest reward that we received. We had the chance to meet in person with so many
fishermen in different places and really learn about their problems and how we can
help them.
