The challenge

Addressing the challenge of awareness and ensuring that environmental concerns remain relevant and discussed in the public dialogue requires a multifaceted approach that engages various stakeholders and utilizes diverse communication and visibility channels. Outreach actions, campaigns, community engagement and public events including screenings and discussions can inspire action and contribute to positive environmental change.

The solution

Following the success of the Cinedoc Cyclades Islands Initiative (on seven islands of the Cyclades and in Attica), in partnership with Anemon Productions, we initiated the program “From Movies to Cycladic Movement”. The aim of the program was to facilitate movie screenings to more islands  and to encourage and enable more audiences to get involved in environmental protection in the Cyclades area and beyond. Combining screenings of fascinating environmental documentaries, Q&As, and virtual seminars, this program developed creative spaces in which we raised awareness, shared experiences and ideas and finally came up with simple choices for a healthier planet.

Achievements

  • 58 screenings of 3 award-winning environmental documentaries: “Mediterranean: life under siege”, “Inhabit”, and “All that breathes”.
  • 48 screenings on 14 Cycladic islands
  • 28 cycladic non-profit associations engaged
  • 9 schools engaged
  • 2478 participants
  • 3 webinars with 130 participants [214 views on YouTube channel]
  • Content creation [pocket actions, flyer with useful tips and quiz]

The program was supported by The Hellenic Initiative.

The Hellenic Initiative was founded in 2012 by members of the global Greek and philhellene communities who were compelled to respond to the worsening economic crisis and inspired to help shape Greece’s long-term recovery. Over time, the Hellenic Initiative has come to invest funds in projects which respond to crises adjacent to the economic one, such as the environmental crisis.

Anemon Productions is a production company dedicated to producing documentaries, educational programmes and cross-media projects as a catalyst for discussion, inspiration and impact. It was founded in 2003, in Athens, Greece, bringing together the expertise of Greek filmmakers, producers and media professionals. Special focus is given to projects promoting inter-cultural and historical understanding across Europe, human rights and sustainable living.

Anemon began the Cinedoc Cyclades Initiative when CPF began funding their project as a Grant. In the meantime, the documentary Mediterranean: Life Under Siege, that they produced, was launched. The Greek premiere was organized in Paros and the documentary has been screened in the Cyclades, Athens and London, in partnership with the CPF.
