The Challenge
Cycladic islands’ promotion as tourist destinations often creates a one-dimensional image of their beauty, which undervalues their nature and environment. This distorted image affects not only how visitors perceive the islands but also how the residents themselves treat their island. There is a need to reshape how our islands are promoted that includes the natural landscape and reminds us of the value and essence of connecting with the environment.
The Solution
With the support of CPF, Antiparos En Plo turned the 8th Health Road Race into an initiative that went beyond the mass consumption of the typical Cycladic island, introducing an alternative touristic model that, beyond typical characteristics, promotes health, active citizenship, and environmental appreciation, specifically during the transitional spring season when the island’s beauty is at its peak but visitor numbers are low.
The event encouraged locals and visitors to connect with nature, promoting athletic and alternative tourism that highlights the island’s unique cultural identity and natural landmarks. Though it focuses on sports, the race functioned as a gateway for broader environmental awareness and community cooperation, proving that a healthy lifestyle is inextricably linked to a thriving, sustainable island ecosystem.
Activities
With the support of the Cyclades Preservation Fund, Antiparos En Plo:
- Organized and conducted a competitive road race through the island’s natural and cultural landmarks.
- Activated a network of local volunteers, associations, and community bodies to support logistics and social cohesion.
- Implemented targeted communication campaigns to promote Antiparos as a destination for athletic and alternative tourism.
- Incorporated sustainability practices into the race’s design to minimize the event’s environmental footprint.
About the Grantee
Founded in 2011, Antiparos En Plo is a non-profit association dedicated to promoting the arts, sportsmanship, and local community culture through environmental initiatives, theatrical performances, and athletic events.
