The Challenge

Mediterranean marine life faces multiple threats. Rising sea temperatures, declining water quality, overfishing, and pollution are just a few of the factors that affect aquatic life. Yet many islands lack the foundational data required to detect or respond to these challenges.

In Kalymnos, coastal habitats like rocky reefs and Posidonia meadows are subject to intense seasonal pressures from tourism, recreational boating, and overfishing. However, there is no systematic monitoring to distinguish between natural variation and human-induced degradation, leaving local authorities and communities who seek to protect their island without evidence-based tools for management. This scientific “blind spot” poses a significant risk to the long-term sustainability of the island’s most productive and sensitive marine zones.

The Solution

This project establishes a repeatable, standardized monitoring framework — the first of its kind for Kalymnos and the first grant of CPF to the island  – to assess the health of coastal biodiversity. By conducting underwater visual census surveys before and after the peak summer season, the team of scientists will generate empirical data on how heatwaves and tourism affect specific marine habitats.

This well-thought-out initiative aims to mobilize the local community, particularly fishermen, through slow and careful engagement to ensure lasting support for conservation. The results will be shared through visual outreach and scientific reports, providing a baseline that can be used to evaluate future protection strategies and guide climate-resilient management.

Activities

With the support of the Cyclades Preservation Fund, Oceanides IMRE will:

  • Establish a standardized sampling design with fixed GPS transects across three key sites in Kalymnos.
  • Conduct pre-summer underwater surveys using SCUBA to document baseline ecological conditions.
  • Perform post-summer surveys to assess short-term ecological shifts following peak tourism and heat periods.
  • Statistically analyze biodiversity indices and species richness using specialized software like Primer 6.
  • Produce a comprehensive conservation assessment report and visual outreach materials for local stakeholders.
