The challenge

Islands of Cyclades face increasing environmental threats due to overtourism, waste mismanagement, and climate change. With Sikinos being no exception, one of the last unspoiled islands of Greece is at risk. Immediate measures are needed in order to preserve the biodiversity and the local identity of the island, before its natural environment and character are irreparably altered through unsustainable tourism models.

The solution

CPF supports Sikinos Union to foster an alternative mindset where nature and sustainability become part of the island’s identity. In order to achieve that Sikinos Union promotes environmental awareness, embedding sustainable practices in daily life, and providing solutions that encourage responsible waste management. Through cultural events, education, and practical recycling initiatives, the Union implements a holistic approach creating a lasting environmental culture where residents and visitors actively contribute to preserving Sikinos.

Activities

Within CPF’s support Sikinos Union organised.

Cultural & Awareness Events, such as:

  •  a Yoga Day on the beach, followed by discussions on the island’s fragile ecosystem.
  • a screening of the environmental documentary “Mediterranean: Sea Under Siege”, in collaboration with Kimolistes and their traveling cinema, Cine Kalisperitis.

Installating small scale recycling infrastructure:

  • dock stations have been placed for aluminum and plastic at Alopronia Beach.
  • 5 recycling stations installed for plastic and paper coffee cups
  • 100 ceramic ashtrays will flood Sikinos’ villages and beaches to reduce cigarette waste.

This project is a step toward making environmental consciousness an integral part of Sikinos’ culture, ensuring the island’s natural beauty remains untouched for generations to come.
