The challenge
Every year up to 4.5 trillion cigarette butts end up in public spaces.
A single cigarette butt contains more than 4000 toxic substances and can contaminate 500 liters of water.
This toxic waste with an average “lifespan” of more than 10 years constitutes a high threat for both the marine and land ecosystems of Cyclades, with about 1.7 million tourists visiting Cyclades Islands every year.
The need to encourage the proper disposal of cigarettes and recycling them is of paramount importance.
The solution
CPF supports the Gopa Project to expand further in Cyclades, raising awareness and reducing the number of cigarette butts that end up in the environment.
The Gopa Project is a work of particular conception that addresses multiple reasons for the problem. More specifically it places specially designed public ashtrays that help the collection and recycle of cigarettes while at the same time inform and raise awareness for the environment, through a voting system.
Activities
Within the project funded by CPF, 30 ashtrays will be placed in the islands of Tinos, Kithnos and Kea;
- providing the local population and tourists with places where they can dispose of their cigarettes butts safely,
- making it easier for local waste managers to collect such a harmful pollutant,
- and raising awareness for the environment
About the Grantee
The Gopa Project is an environmental project that travels all over Greece reducing the incorrect disposal of cigarette waste while promoting social and environmental messages.
What you can do
- The main principle of pollutant reduction is Reduction. You have a double reason to stop smoking. Protect your health and the environment.
- In the case you are a smoker, please do not throw your cigarette buts. Keep them until you find a public bin. Pocket ashtrays are a great alternative too.
- Make a donation to CPF so we continue to support innovative projects for environmental conservation.
