On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2021, the Federation of Women’s Associations “Oi Kores of the Cyclades” and the Cyclades Preservation Fund (CPF) announced a new strategic partnership with the aim of strengthening the Cycladic Women’s Associations as well as their emergence as timeless ambassadors of environmental protection and sustainability in their local communities of the island.
The collaboration began with an online bazaar where we aimed to raise money to be used for the purchase of reusable utensils (plates, glasses, cutlery) which will be donated to the 16 Members – Women’s Associations of the Federation, representing 13 Cycladic islands, to replace hundreds of disposable plastics commonly used at local celebrations and gatherings of the local associations annually.

The ultimate goal is to raise awareness, change the culture and highlight good practices that the islands have adopted over time, in this case the choice of reusable utensils over those of disposable plastics. The Cycladic woman, writes Manolis Glezos, “Existed from the earliest ancient times, as shown by the Cycladic female idols, the womb of life and the cradle of the Cycladic existence”. From the woman-symbol to the everyday woman of the 21st century, Cycladic women will undertake the responsibility for the sustainability of our islands, sensitizing the local communities, highlighting the intergenerational approach that must distinguish timeless challenges, such as protection of the environment.
The CPF will deliver on time the reusable utensils to the local women associations for the summer and will organise online training sessions for the women of the Cyclades so that they will become real influencers in their communities!
