On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2021, the Federation of Women’s Associations “Daughters of the Cyclades” and the Cyclades Preservation Fund (CPF) announced a new strategic partnership with the aim of strengthening the Cycladic Women’s Associations as well as their emergence as timeless ambassadors of environmental protection and sustainability in their local communities on the islands.
The collaboration began with an online marketplace where we aimed to raise money to be used for the purchase of reusable utensils (plates, glasses, cutlery) which will be donated to the 16 members of the Federation of Women’s Associations to replace hundreds of disposable plastics commonly used at local celebrations and gatherings of the local associations annually.
The ultimate goal is to raise awareness, to change culture and to highlight good practices that the islands have adopted over time, in this case the choice of reusable utensils over those of disposable plastics. The Cycladic woman, writes Manolis Glezos, “Existed from the earliest ancient times, as shown by the Cycladic female idols, the womb of life and the cradle of the Cycladic existence”. From the this symbolic understanding to the real, everyday woman of the 21st century, Cycladic women are at the heart of sustainability of our islands; sensitising the local communities and highlighting the intergenerational approach that must distinguish timeless challenges, such as protection of the environment.
The CPF will deliver the reusable utensils to the local associations for the summer and will organise online training sessions for the women of the Cyclades so that they can become real influencers in their communities!
