Summary
The special screening of “Ocean with David Attenborough” was successfully held in Syros on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at the PALLAS cinema, in Ermoupolis, Syros, with 110 people in attendance.
The event, held with free admission, took place under particularly adverse weather conditions, which makes the attendance of the public even more significant and indicative of the intense interest of the local community.
The screening was organized by the Cyclades Preservation Fund (CPF) within the framework of the Revive Our Ocean Greece 2026 initiative coordinated by CPF in Greece, with the aim of promoting the international 30×30 goal and informing and raising awareness among local communities about the importance of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The screening took place in collaboration with the Municipality of Syros-Ermoupolis, WWF Greece, Apano Meria Syros SCE, the K.E.P.E.A Syros-Ermoupolis and the Women’s Association of Syros. The event was held under the auspices of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA) and National Geographic Pristine Seas, with the support of the Athina I. Martinou and A.G. Leventis Foundations and the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center (EKKOMED). The communication sponsor was ERT.
A powerful message for the seas
The event was prefaced by Vangelis Paravas, Scientific Advisor of CPF, who referred to the importance of protecting marine ecosystems and the need to strengthen Marine Protected Areas in Greece.
The screening highlighted the unique beauty of the oceans, but also the modern threats they face, conveying a well-documented and at the same time optimistic message: that nature can recover when it is effectively protected.
Greetings were delivered by the Deputy Mayor for Environment of Syros-Ermoupolis Ioannis Maragos, Anastasia Naxaki, representing the Central Aegean Protected Areas Management Unit of OFYPEKA, as well as Yiannis Prevedouros, responsible for local actions in Syros for WWF Greece. All of them stressed the importance of cooperation between environmental organizations and institutional bodies for the effective protection of the marine environment.
