The next months will be dedicated to planning how Greece, and its regions such as the Cyclades and the Ionian Islands, will apply resources available from the EU’s regional and rural development funds during the new (2021-2027) programming period.
These funds, which will amount to more than € 20 billion, will fund the sustainable development model to be followed in the upcoming years. All scientific studies concur that this next decade is critical for the transition towards sustainable development. The extent to which the transition will take place is, in turn, dependent on decisions make today and actions implemented through to 2030.
Decisions must lead to transformative change in policy and in practice, particularly of those sectors such as agriculture, energy and tourism that have the greatest impact on the country’s natural environment. The aim will be to showcase how funds can be channelled into sustainable development which can stand the test of time and also remain in line with EU environmental policy.
With their new project entitled “EU Financing Greece towards a sustainable future in the Cyclades ”, our partner the Green Tank aims to document, promote and plan the sustainable development that Greece, and in particular the Cyclades and the Ionian Islands, will undertake using these EU funds over the 2021-2027 period.
Specifically, the project aims to involve and inform key stakeholders at the national and regional levels about the sustainability potential of the Cyclades and Ionian regions during the 2021-2027 programming period. In this context, the project will support the building of the capacity of these authorities as well as of:
– members of the Greek Parliament and of the European Parliament
– local communities
– NGOs and local organizations.
In parallel, during the implementation of the project, opportunities will be sought to built cooperative relationships with these stakeholders that will influence not only the design and planning of the new programming period but also its implementation and its monitoring.
UPDATE:
The Green Tank’s new report has revealed the European funding sources that Greece and its regions will have available for their green transformation of key sectors of the economy.
During the next years, Greece will have an unprecedented level of EU resources available. This situation marks a rare opportunity for the country. Used properly, this funding can act as a catalyst for change in strategy and development, in line with the provisions of the European Green Agreement.
Aiming to contribute to this direction, the Green Tank’s new report “Financing opportunities for a sustainable future during the 2021-2027 period” presents the main provisions of the EU’s multiannual financial framework (MFF) for the 2021-2027 period, focusing on the financing opportunities that will support Greece’s transition to a sustainable future.
