The project “Activities to inform and to raise awareness for the preservation of Posidonia oceanica meadows in the Cyclades islands” is implemented under the Operational Programme Fisheries & Seas 2014-2020 / NSRF Priority Axis 4, Increasing Employment and Territorial Cohesion, in cooperation with the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) and the Development Corporation of Local Authorities of the Cyclades (FLAGS), on the islands of Syros and Sifnos.
The project includes the mapping and assessment of the Posidonia (Posidonia oceanica) meadows in selected areas of the islands of Syros and Sifnos using field observation and a state-of-the-art ROV purchased for the needs of the project and used by the team of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR). In addition, intensifying the efforts of the Cyclades Preservation Fund for the promotion and protection of the Poseidonia meadows in the Cyclades region, a series of public information and awareness-raising actions were implemented, such as events in the project islands, the supply and installation of information signs and the production and distribution of information leaflets in Greek, English, French and Italian. Finally, 2 series of animated videos were produced (available in Greek and English) to inform the public about the importance of the Poseidonia meadows and to encourage the avoidance of anchoring by recreational boats near and on them.
The program is co-financed by Greece and the European Union
