The challenge:

Many wildlife species are threatened in Greece. Each one of them plays an important role for the ecological balance, biodiversity, and overall environmental health. While their rescue is of paramount importance, the support of trustworthy and scientifically qualified actors who undertake that mission to protect them is limited.

The need for a regional information and rescue network for wildlife in the region is crucial given the increased incidents of wild animals in need of rescue and rehabilitation, coupled with limited resources, capacity and knowledge about conservation practices and first aid support.

Moreover, organizations find themselves facing strict legal frameworks while they become targets of conflicting interests.

The solution:

In 2024 CPF supported the urgent need of Naxos Wildlife Protection to respond to tightened licensing obligations in advance of changing legal requirements. This ensured the ongoing and smooth operation of the organisation, protecting it from any legal vulnerability by securing the necessary to renew its equipment.

Our donation allowed Naxos Wildlife Protection to increase its quality of work and capacity to respond to a larger number of incidents of injured/sick wild animals.

Project’s deliverables:

The amount donated was used to purchase and install:

  • A veterinary scale for big animals (such as sea turtles and griffon vultures).
  • A scale for smaller animals (such as hedgehogs and small birds).
  • Stainless steel crates used for animals in intensive care.
  • A sterilization furnace.
  • Surgical tools (like surgical forceps and scissors for bandages).
  • A water filter for a sea turtle tank.

Since the arrival of the equipment and tools, by the end of 2024 Naxos Wildlife Protection has treated 75 wild animals, the majority being wild birds and hedgehogs, while three sea turtles were successfully rehabilitated back to the sea.
