This World Ocean Day, the Greek Islands Seagrass Alliance (GISA) presents the new informative video spot “Crime on the Beach”, highlighting one of the most precious but often misunderstood treasures of the Greek coasts: Posidonia seagrass.
Whithered Posidonia leaves that naturally accumulate on beaches are not “garbage”. The mats they create are a natural shield against erosion, protecting the coasts, enhancing biodiversity and contributing to the maintenance of healthy coastal ecosystems.
In the sea, the Posidonia meadows are incubators of life, natural water filters and one of our most important allies in carbon storage in the Mediterranean.
The partners of the Greek Islands Seagrass Alliance (GISA) share an open call to citizens and organisations to sign the pledge and become part of the alliance to protect Posidonia!

The Greek Islands Seagrass Alliance (GISA) is a pioneering five-year program (2025–2030), which aspires to be the first coordinated nationwide effort to protect seagrasses through the collaboration of scientific bodies, environmental organizations, local governments, businesses and citizens.
The program is designed and coordinated by the Cyclades Preservation Fund (CPF) in collaboration with HCMR – Institute of Oceanography, Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN), Ionian Environment Foundation (IEF), Argosaronic Environment Foundation (AEF) and Aenaos Thalassa.
