The Challenge
While technology often makes our daily lives easier, it frequently comes at the cost of increased environmental pressure. Modern lifestyles, along with the development of tourism, have fundamentally altered the way of living on the Greek islands, often leading to the widespread abandonment of eco-friendly practices.
There is a pressing need for a critical assessment of the changes driven by technology, considering both personal benefits and the negative impacts at the individual, social, and environmental levels. To address these challenges effectively, we must reconsider and reflect upon the systems and practices that existed before the integration of these new technologies
In Syros, this global trend is clearly visible; the traditional craft of wooden shipbuilding is being replaced by plastic-based (GRP) vessels, which increase microplastic pollution and have a higher carbon footprint. Furthermore, the city’s reliance on motorized transport has sidelined traditional, sustainable options like cycling. As the island’s industrial heritage is neglected, the potential to use “adaptive reuse” and soft mobility to improve climate resilience is being lost.
The Solution
On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Hermoupolis, the project offers a zero-carbon experiential journey that transforms Syros’ industrial history into a solution for modern ecological challenges. By using vintage bicycles for transport and traditional wooden “kaikia” for wind-powered sailing, the project demonstrates that upcycling and soft mobility are viable strategies for a green future. Reclaiming the shipyards as “open workshops,” the initiative creates a compelling narrative that connects island traditions with the circular economy. Highlighted during the celebration of Hermoupolis’ 200th anniversary, the project turns visitors into conscious ambassadors of a low-impact tourism model that respects the island’s carrying capacity.
Activities
With the support of the Cyclades Preservation Fund, HERMOUPOLIS HERITAGE will:
- Host a “Heritage on Wheels” vintage bicycle tour along the waterfront to promote soft mobility and zero-carbon transport.
- Organize “Living Shipyards” field visits to study the environmental benefits of wooden versus synthetic shipbuilding.
- Deliver “The Shipwright’s Wisdom” experiential workshops where participants learn resource-efficient design from master craftsmen.
- Conduct a “Wind & Wood” sailing demonstration on a traditional boat to showcase wind power as a primary green energy solution.
- Engage local shipwrights to ensure the transfer of intangible maritime knowledge to the community and future generations.
About the Grantees
Hermoupolis Heritage is a well-known local NGO dedicated to repurposing industrial heritage into cultural hubs that serve as engines for the sustainable economy.
What You Can Do
- Opt for soft mobility like cycling or sailing to reduce your environmental footprint.
- Seek and compare older practices to new modern solutions (for example car vs biking for small distances), evaluate the pros and cons for both you and the environment and make a choice.
- Donate to the Cyclades Preservation Fund to support more projects like this across the islands.
SDGs
CPF’s grants support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This grant specifically supports:
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – Repurposing industrial heritage strengthens local identity and creates sustainable, resilient public spaces.
- SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – The project highlights natural, repairable materials over disposable synthetics, advocating for circular economy principles.
- SDG 13: Climate Action – Promoting vintage bicycles and wind-powered sailing directly addresses the need to replace fossil fuels with zero-carbon alternatives.
