The Challenge
The wetland and sand dune ecosystems of Paros, particularly those hosting rare juniper forests, are vital for the island’s biodiversity and coastal protection. However, these fragile habitats are degrading rapidly due to seasonal human pressure, unregulated visitor circulation, and the creation of informal paths that trample vegetation and accelerate erosion. This environmental strain is further compounded by illegal waste disposal and a lack of public awareness regarding the functions and legal protection status of these Natura 2000 areas.
The Solution
This project addresses habitat degradation by establishing a coherent and informative signage system at high-pressure access points such as Filizi, Santa Maria, and Lageri. By pairing bilingual educational panels with standardized Natura 2000 entry signs, the initiative provides visitors with the knowledge of “why this matters” and the rules of “what is forbidden”.
In close coordination with the Municipality of Paros, the project aims to improve visitor behavior, reduce vegetation loss, and foster a sense of collective responsibility and local pride in the island’s natural heritage.
Activities
With the support of the Cyclades Preservation Fund, Hundred Oaks will:
- Identify priority dune access points and secure official permissions in coordination with the Municipality and local stakeholders.
- Develop clear Greek-English educational content explaining dune functions and species sensitivities, validated by environmental experts.
- Design a coherent, readable signage system that aligns with existing local conventions.
- Fabricate and install durable, UV-resistant panels at selected entrances using low-impact manual methods.
- Launch a targeted communication and social media campaign to amplify conservation messages among residents, schools, and tourists.
About the Grantees
Hundred Oaks is a French, yet active in Paros, non-profit association established in 2025. The organization is dedicated to inspiring the public to discover nature, permaculture, and biodiversity through events, workshops, and educational visits to local edible forests.
What You Can Do
- Stay on designated paths and avoid trampling sensitive dune vegetation or entering fenced-off areas when visiting any ecosystem.
- Choose to explore Paros’ natural beauty responsibly as an eco-conscious visitor.
- Support the Cyclades Preservation Fund to bring more local action to the Aegean.
SDGs
CPF’s grants support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This grant specifically supports:
- SDG 15: Life on Land – The project protects fragile terrestrial ecosystems and supports the conservation of coastal biodiversity.
- SDG 4: Quality Education – Through educational interpretation and outreach, the initiative fosters environmental literacy and behavioral change.
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – The project strengthens the preservation of natural heritage and promotes a more sustainable tourism model
