The Challenge
Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental threats facing the Cycladic islands today. On Kimolos and the surrounding Natura-protected areas, plastic waste—including single-use straws—endangers marine ecosystems, contaminates vital Posidonia meadows, enters the marine food web, and threatens iconic species such as the Caretta caretta turtle and the Mediterranean monk seal. The reduction of single plastic is necessary to help Kimolos become a more sustainable island.
The Solution
StoryTelling Kimolos – No Plastic introduces a tangible and community-driven solution: replacing single-use plastic straws with eco-friendly alternatives made from wheat stems. Alongside this practical intervention, the project harnesses the power of education and storytelling to raise awareness, engage the community, and inspire long-lasting behavioral change.
The project specifically aims to encourage local businesses to adopt eco-friendly straws, making a difference not only for the local communities’ plastic footprint but also for that of the visitors.
Activities
With the support of CPF Cyclades Unified will implement the following activities:
- Businesses Adopting eco-friendly straws: Local businesses will join the initiative and be supported with training on sustainability and waste reduction.
- Microplastics Workshop: An interactive, non-formal educational workshop will raise awareness about microplastic pollution and its harmful impacts on human health and marine life.
- Storytelling Session: Local fishermen, residents, and business owners will share real-life experiences with plastic pollution, connecting culture and sustainability through lived narratives.
- Video Documentation: A documentary-style video will showcase the journey of the project, the community’s involvement, and the environmental impact.
Business Toolkit Development: A practical guide will be created for local businesses, offering step-by-step methods for adopting sustainable practices, ensuring the project’s long-term legacy.
